The Ponies Made Me Do It

The following was a last minute birthday gift to a good friend of mine, with him coming up with the concept while I handled the graphic design.
mentioned to me late on his birthday that he wanted to make himself a t-shirt with 'Angry Pinkie' on it. I asked him what image he was planning to use and he showed me some pics he managed to pull from the net.
And at that point I said "NAY! Thou shalt not be burdened by resolutions as heinous as that which was bestowed upon thee!" because, as we all know, friends don't let friends print low resolution images that they would regret later.

So in the end, I asked him to hand over the image and the copy-writing he wanted to add and to give me a few hours and the end result was the vector print-ready image you see here before you now.

The print came out pretty good on the shirt and proudly wears it to work most days. Head on over to his DeviantART page and you might catch a glimpse of him wearing it.

First things first, let me just mention that this was done before I was a fan on the new My Little Pony, so Pinkie Pie might have some elements missing or slightly off colors, since I never watched the show prior to making the design.
Other than that, it was actually very interesting trying to conform to the MLP style for the first time.

A problem I came across was that the reference image was cropped around Pinkie's neck, which clashed with the text above it and... well... made the image look like a mafia-fear-inducing-message-of-a-severed-horses-head. To get around this, I took the 'O' from 'PONIES', converted it to workable curves, made it crimson and duplicated, warped, scaled and rotated it until I got the effect of blood so that I can hide the crop line. The end result was an image that looked like a mafia-fear-inducing-message-of-a-severed-horses-head... BUT with the text not clashing so much anymore... so yeah... partial success there.

Another thing that occurred to me only after I gave him the print-ready file, was that all the colors were just eyedropper RGB values I used from the reference pics. Seeing as how vivid and intense some of the palettes are for the MLP style (especially on the characters), I was almost dead-sure the printers at the place he took it to wouldn't even come near to that gamut range. But in the end, I was pleasantly surprised how close the colors came to their intended levels.
